Introduction

Education has always been an integral part of the Livery movement and this is reflected within the Worshipful Company of Launderers. A Committee dedicated to Education has historically and continually supported industry training courses through the consideration of course completion grants to delegates. In addition to this, the Launderers’ well established Travelling Scholarship scheme, affords up and coming members of our industry to visit industry locations within Europe to develop their industry knowledge and skills base.

Aims and Principles

The aims and purposes of the charitable and education trust, are dedicated to the improvement, and, indeed, betterment of the craft, trade and profession of Laundering and Cleaning. From the outset, the Company has set out to develop educational and charitable links and provides an annual award to the outstanding student on the Diploma in Dry-Cleaning and Laundry Technology course at Derby Lonsdale College of Art and Technology.

Looking to the future the Livery is seeking to introduce new training and lecture initiatives to support the exchange of knowledge within our industry. It shall also, against the backdrop of the review of Government Apprenticeship Schemes and training opportunities, maintain its commitment to supporting all new initiatives within our industry and therefore, the investment in those who work within it

Governance

Each livery determines the focus of their charitable giving in line with the rules of the Charity Commission. In 2012 the 109 livery companies gave over £45m to support educational development.

The Trust was funded by the founders of the company and has benefited from regular donations from liverymen and some legacy gifts.

Our Trustees oversee the investment of our funds with the help of investment fund managers who are appointed by the Trustees. They also oversee the spending of the income from the Trust with particular focus on supporting the development of the crafts of Laundry and Dry Cleaning with a number of grants and bursaries to students and lectures.

The Trustees

The Trustees of the Trust are always the three officers of the Company, the Deputy Master, and the Treasurer. Additional Trustees are appointed on a three-year basis.

Journeymen

In 1965 the Company established an Apprenticeship Scheme that aimed to encourage the entry of young people into the industry.

In 2015 the Company introduced the Journeyman Scheme which is an additional grade of membership with the intention of recognising a person’s early achievements and determination to succeed in the textile care industry.
