On Wednesday 22nd April I went to the RAF club to join the assembled throng for the annual Cobham lecture sponsored by the air pilots. Given eloquently by Captain Rob Evans.
The subject was “In the slipstream of Alcock and Brown”, the first men who crossed the Atlantic in a Vickers Vimy plane on the 14/15 June 1919 in 16 hrs and 1900 miles from Newfoundland to Galway where the plane landed in a bog and crashed . As a flying experience , no GPS no artificial horizon no trim and 870 gallons of fuel .
Great feat of men from Manchester. Both were knighted by the King for their achievement.
Sadly Alcock was killed the same year in an air crash
